Dental crowns can help restore teeth when a tooth is badly decayed or broken down and there is not sufficient tooth structure to place a filling. Crowns can be porcelain, porcelain to metal or gold or made of other durable materials. Two appointments are needed for a crown. During the first appointment, the area is anesthesized and impressions of your teeth and mouth are taken to help form your temporary crown. Then the tooth is shaped and contoured to remove any decay and prepare for the new crown. If extensive tooth structure is missing, sometimes the tooth will need a Build Up, which is a large foundational filling to help provide support and retention for the crown. We currently use a Chairside Oral Scanner to take digital impressions of the tooth and to communicate information to the lab on how to make your new crown. You will leave the office with a temporary crown. A second appointment is needed to remove the temporary crown and permamently cement your new crown.
